Just as Dorothy is about to hop into the Wizard’s balloon and return home, another whirlwind suddenly sweeps through the Emerald City — carrying Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion far away to the curious and chaotic land of Wonderland.

Armed with their newly acquired gifts — brains, heart, and courage — Dorothy’s friends are determined to help her find her way back to Kansas. But Wonderland is nothing like Oz. Logic twists, time misbehaves, and riddles replace reason.

Along the way, they encounter some very familiar — and very peculiar — faces: Alice, the hurried White Rabbit, the delightfully mad Mad Hatter, the excitable March Hare, and the mischievous Cheshire Cat — along with many other strange inhabitants of this topsy-turvy realm.

In a fantastically fun, twisted-up adventure, Oz courage meets Wonderland curiosity as Dorothy and her friends discover that finding home may require more than brains, heart, and courage — it may take a little nonsense, too.

The Playwrights Workshop of The Theatre of Western Springs Proudly Presents:

READERS THEATRE

A first look at a brand new show, crafted by the talented writers of the TWS Playwrights Workshop.  This special event features a staged reading brought to life by TWS Actives and guided by a director from the TWS Directors Workshop.

Join us on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 2:00 pm in the Cattell Theatre and engage your imagination as actors bring a script to life.  Stay after the performance for an audience discussion and join the conversation about these exciting new works.

The reading is free, and donations are accepted.

The inaugural reading:

“Lake Blue Terrace,” a full-length play by Edward M. Pinkowski, explores the shifting tides of family, identity, and history.  Set in June 1989—on the cusp of the Cold War’s end—the play follows a Polish political refugee and her adult son as they struggle to keep their weathered lakeside resort afloat along the shores of Lake Michigan.  Through sharp humor, simmering conflict, and poignant intergenerational dynamics, the story reveals how world events ripple through even the smallest of communities.

Directed by Edward W. Wavak

What is Readers Theatre?

Also known as concert readings, this format strips theatre down to its essence: actors, scripts, and storytelling.  With scripts in hand, the focus is on the words and characters. It’s a unique way to experience a play — and a golden opportunity for the audience to comment on the work with the creative staff.

Come join us for this special event, Where Words Take Center Stage!
