About the Author
Friedrich Dürrenmatt was born in Konofingen, Switzerland (near Berne) in 1921. His father was a Protestant pastor. He was 18 when wwii started, and although Switzerland remained—on the surface, at least—neutral, he was intensely aware of the hardship, destruction, and death that transformed the world around his affluent, peaceful country. This may account for one of the major themes that marks most of his written output: guilt through passivity, or the inevitability of wrong-doing, even
(especially?) if one strives to avoid it. The playwright has referred to this as “the neurosis of the neutrals.” Dürrenmatt’s early career owes some of its prestige and rapid success to Switzerland’s claim of neutrality. Due to his country’s peaceful stance, Dürrenmatt was one of very few writers of his generation and language not to be indoctrinated by relentless Nazi propaganda. Thus, after the war ended, when Dürrenmatt was 24, he was one of the few writers prepared to fill the cultural vacuum left on the German stage by the
intellectual and artistic bankruptcy of Hitler’s regime.Dürrenmatt wrote more than 25 plays, including radio plays and television adaptations. Among his more popular works are An Angel Comes to Babylon, The Meteor, The Physicists, Romulus the Great, and Play Strindberg. Several of his novels and plays have been made into films. Dürrenmatt died in 1990.
